No one likes to wake up in the morning tasting something bad in their mouth. You can usually solve that problem quickly with good toothbrushing, flossing, and mouthwash. However, if you have a bad taste in your mouth for much of the day, there may be something else going on. Here are some thoughts on where that bad taste might be coming from.
Medication
When you were a child, it was fairly easy to get you to take medicine because it tasted sweet. However, pills do not have the same taste. In fact, some of the pills are quite bitter and can linger on your tongue for hours. Common bad-taste culprits include antibiotics, allergy pills, and steroids. If you are taking medication first thing in the morning when you wake up and begin your morning routine, you may want to take your medication first, then brush your teeth, floss, and use mouthwash. That should solve the problem.
Sinus Issues
If you are one of those unlucky people with allergies, you may also suffer from sinus problems. Your sinuses are located immediately above your teeth and gums on either side of your nose. During allergy season, mucus and infection can fill these sinus cavities, causing an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
Cavities or Gum Disease
One of the most common signs you have a problem with your teeth and gums is bad breath, even after brushing your teeth. If you have a cavity, the infection in your tooth can cause bad breath. Gum disease, which is a gum infection by bacteria, also causes your breath to be bad. If you think your bad breath may be caused by tooth decay or gum disease, there are some signals you can watch for. If you have a cavity, you may also be experiencing pain in a tooth, especially when you drink something hot or cold or when you bite down on food. One of the earliest signs of gum infection other than your breath is red, bleeding, or swollen gums.
