The Simple Act Of Brushing

Posted on 1/1/2026 by Riverwind Dental
A smiling young couple in the bathroom mirror practicing good dental hygiene together. Let's talk about something we all do, hopefully twice a day: brushing our teeth! It might seem simple, but brushing is the foundation of good dental hygiene and plays a HUGE role in keeping your mouth healthy and happy. Think of it as your daily defense against the things that can cause problems, like cavities and gum disease.

Why Brushing Matters

Our mouths are full of bacteria. Some are helpful, but others feed on the sugars and starches we eat, producing acids that attack tooth enamel. This is what leads to cavities. Brushing helps remove these bacteria and food particles before they can cause damage. It also removes plaque, a sticky film that constantly forms on our teeth. If plaque isn't removed, it can harden into tartar (also called calculus), which is much harder to remove and can irritate your gums.

The Right Tools for the Job

Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste is important.
•  Your Toothbrush: Look for a toothbrush with soft bristles. Hard bristles can actually damage your gums and enamel over time. The size of the toothbrush head should allow you to comfortably reach all areas of your mouth, including the back teeth. Electric toothbrushes can also be very effective, as they often have built-in timers and features that help you brush properly. Replace your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
•  Fluoride Toothpaste: Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to acid attacks. Using a fluoride toothpaste is a key part of preventing cavities. Make sure your toothpaste has the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance to ensure it's safe and effective.

The Proper Brushing Technique

Simply scrubbing your teeth isn't enough. Here’s a simple, effective method:
1~ Wet your toothbrush and apply a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
2~ Angle the bristles at a 45-degree angle towards the gumline.
3~ Use gentle, circular motions to clean the outer surfaces of your teeth. Don't press too hard!
4~ Repeat on the inner surfaces of your teeth.
5~ Clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
6~ Don't forget your tongue! Brushing your tongue helps remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
7~ Spit out the toothpaste after brushing, but don't rinse with water right away. This allows the fluoride to stay on your teeth longer and provide maximum protection.

How Long and How Often?

The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes, twice a day. Many electric toothbrushes have built-in timers to help you brush for the right amount of time. One brushing should be done before bed. This helps remove the bacteria and food particles that have accumulated throughout the day.

Brushing is Only Part of the Story

While brushing is crucial, it's just one part of a complete dental hygiene routine. Don't forget to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. Regular check-ups with your dentist are also essential for maintaining optimal oral health. Your dentist can identify and treat problems early, before they become more serious.

Taking a few minutes each day to brush your teeth properly can make a big difference in your overall health and well-being. It's a simple act with a powerful impact!
