I Have a Cut in My Mouth That Has Turned White. What Is It?

You want to have as healthy a mouth as possible, which means that you spend time checking your mouth for any issues. If you have checked out your teeth and gums lately, you may have noticed that you have a cut inside your mouth, along your gums, or your cheekbone that has turned white. While the white color may be alarming, in general, it is nothing to worry about. Here are some explanations for that funny-looking cut in your mouth.

Mouth Ulcers or Canker Sores

A canker sore is also called a mouth ulcer. No one knows why people get canker sores, but eating foods like citrus fruit or tomatoes that are high in acid, biting your cheeks, and stress tend to make canker sores more common. They also seem to affect teenagers and young adults more often than older adults.

Canker sores are usually bright red with a white or yellow center. As they heal, the redness disappears, and the white becomes more prominent. Canker sores can be treated with salt water rinses, as well as pastes, to alleviate pain.

Cuts in Mouth

It does not seem likely that you would cut your mouth on an object, but it happens more frequently than you realize because your teeth are made for cutting and tearing your food. People frequently bite the insides of their mouths, which can lead to cuts. Also, people can cut their mouths on cans and bottles they may be trying to open.

If you have a cut in your mouth, it may appear red and bleed immediately after you cut it. However, as the cut begins to heal, it turns white. While this may seem strange to you, remember that the body changes cuts on your skin to a darker color before healing them. In your mouth, the cut becomes lighter as it heals. As with canker sores, you may want to use a saltwater rinse in your mouth each day to promote healing.
