There is so much to remember about newborns that it is understandable if you have questions about your baby. Many parents worry about keeping their newborns as clean as possible, which is no easy job when newborns are constantly messy. In addition to bathing and keeping your baby as clean as possible, what should new parents do about keeping the gums healthy?
Dental Care For Newborns
First, newborn gums are very sensitive. You should not brush them with a toothbrush. Instead, after your baby is done feeding, you should use a wet washcloth and wipe their gums gently. You do not need to use toothpaste or soap to clean their gums because that might irritate them.
There are several excellent reasons to clean the gums before they get their first teeth. First, wiping their gums after each feeding cleans the gums and rids them of the bacteria that can cause gum disease. Second, cleaning the gums after they eat prepares your baby for when you have to start brushing their teeth.
When Your Baby Begins to Get Teeth
As your baby develops, they will begin to get teeth. Some babies get teeth as early as four months old. When your baby begins to get teeth, you will need to use a toothbrush designed for infants. Also, be sure that you use toothpaste designed for infants because babies do not need fluoride for their brand-new teeth.
How Should I Brush the Baby Teeth?
When you begin to brush the teeth, you will want to use a minuscule amount of toothpaste and gently brush the front and back of the tooth. It will take you a very small amount of time to brush their teeth when your baby first begins to have teeth erupt. You may notice swellings or bumps along the gumline before the tooth breaks the surface of the gumline. Cleaning or brushing their teeth and gums may even soothe the tooth pain from the erupting teeth.
